  1. Catherin Schöberl (none/she), born 1994 in Germany, is an artist and educator based in Basel, Switzerland. C graduated from the University of Cologne and the Academy of Art and Design Basel, and has attended courses at University Basel, ZHDK Zurich and HDK-Valand, Gothenburg.

Für das aktivistisch vermittlerische Kunstprojekt kooperierten der Verein Schlüsselmensch e.V. und die Kulturschaffenden Catherin Schöberl (Künstler:in und Pädagog:in), Christoph Matt (Eco-Social Designer) und Helena Schwär (Kunststudentin) miteinander. Das Projekt entstand auf den konkreten Wunsch einer Gruppe Jugendlicher hin, die im Geflüchtetenwohnheim St. Christoph (Freiburg) leben und eine eigene Statue für den öffentlichen Raum gestalten möchten. Mit dieser künstlerischen Interventionsserie wurde dieses Vorhaben nun aufgenommen und erste Vorschläge und Prototypen für eigene Skulpturen geschaffen. 

Welche Denkmäler gibt es in der Stadt? Wen zeigen sie? Wer ist nicht vertreten? Wie viele Männer und Frauen sind dargestellt? Finden wir Allegorien oder konkrete Personen? Wie sind sie dargestellt? Und wem wollen wir selbst Sichtbarkeit geben und warum?

For the activist mediation art project, the association Schlüsselmensch e.V. and the cultural workers Catherin Schöberl (artist and educator), Christoph Matt (eco-social designer) and Helena Schwär (art student) cooperated with each other. The project arose from the specific request of a group of young people living in the St. Christoph refugee accommodation (Freiburg) who wanted to design their own statue for public space. With this artistic intervention series, this intention has now been taken up and initial proposals and prototypes for own monuments have been created. And who do we ourselves want to give visibility and why?
What monuments are there in the city? Who do they show? Who is not represented? How many men and women are represented? Do we find allegories or concrete persons? How are they represented?

Die Unofficial Hiking Society Aktionsgesellschaft (AG)​ ist ein organisches Kunstkollektiv mit Sitz in Basel, Schweiz. Die AG setzt physische und digitale Wanderungen als Mittel zur Erkundung der Umwelt und zum Wissensaufbau ein. Inoffizielle Führungen bieten kritische Informationen zu Themen wie Kapitalismus und Neoliberalismus und schaffen feministische und kritische Gegenerzählungen zu dem, was Grosskonzerne und Institutionen über sich selbst erzählen. Das "Inoffizielle" steht für den Widerstand gegen ökonomische Normen, Konformität und Bürokratie und setzt diesem die unmittelbare Aneignung der uns umgebenden Räume entgegen, indem die Wanderungen ohne Voranmeldungen und ausserhalb des Radars der jeweiligen Institutionen stattfinden. Mit wechselnden Mitgliedern und Themen zielt das Kollektiv darauf ab, den öffentlichen Raum und die ihm innewohnenden ausgrenzenden Strukturen gegenüber bestimmten Gruppen und Gemeinschaften sichtbar zu machen und zu reflektieren. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf halb-öffentlichen Räumen, wie z. B. Firmengebäude, verschlossene Bereiche öffentlicher Museen oder unternehmensinternen Informationen. Wir denken dabei nicht nur an physische Räume, sondern auch an Konzepte wie das Militär, Lobbying und den Zugang zu Informationen im Internet, die zwar zugänglich sind, aber aufgrund des schieren Volumens, der Zeit und der Energie, die es kosten würde, sich mit ihnen zu befassen, verschlossen bleiben. Als Plattform für Forschung und Reflexion über die öffentliche Sphäre schafft das Projekt Möglichkeiten, sich kritisch mit solchen halb verborgenen, halb öffentlichen Welten auseinanderzusetzen und kreiert neue Öffentlichkeit(en), indem immer wieder neu zusammengesetzte Besucher:innengruppen an den Wanderungen und dem Austausch teilnehmen.

Erleben Sie eine inoffizielle Campus-Tour über den Novartis Campus, online und vor Ort. Sieben ausgewählte Standorte bilden den Hintergrund für Diskussionen über fehlende Intersektionalität in klinischen Studien, das "Anderssein" von Körpern, die nicht von cis-Männer* sind, postkoloniale Nachwirkungen in ausgelagerten Produktionsstätten, Verschmutzung von Umwelt und Natur und historisch feministische Entwicklungen in der Pharmaziebranche.

The Unofficial Hiking Society Aktionsgesellschaft (AG) is an organic art collective based in Basel, Switzerland. The AG relies on physical and digital hikes as a means of environmental exploration and knowledge building. Unofficial walks offer critical information on topics such as capitalism and neoliberalism and create feminist and critical counter-narratives to what big corporations and institutions tell about themselves. The "unofficial" stands for resistance to economic norms, conformity and bureaucracy and counters these with the direct appropriation of the spaces around us, as the walks take place without advance notice and outside of institutions' radar. With changing members and themes, the collective aims to make visible and reflect on public space and its inherent exclusionary structures towards certain groups and communities. The focus is on semi-public spaces, such as company buildings, closed areas of public museums or internal company information. We are not only thinking of physical spaces, but also concepts such as the military, lobbying and access to information on the internet that are accessible but remain closed due to the sheer volume, time and energy it would take to engage with them. As a platform for research and reflection on the public sphere, the project creates opportunities to critically engage with such semi-hidden, semi-public worlds and creates new public(s) by constantly reconfiguring groups of visitors to participate in the walks and exchanges.

Edition #1, Unofficial Novartis Campus
Explore  an unofficial campus tour of the Novartis Campus, online and on site. Seven selected sites will be the backdrop for discussions on lack of intersectionality in clinical trials, the "otherness" of bodies that are not cis-male*, postcolonial after-effects in outsourced production facilities, pollution of the environment and nature, and historically feminist developments in the pharmaceutical industry. ++ POP UP CULTURE - URBAN EMPOWERMENT            Remodeled eBike, Public Talk and Intervention: “Map The Map - Unorte in Basel“, Basel/CH, 2023

Ein Hybrid aus Apéro Velo, Ausstellungsdisplay, Pop Up Workshop und Veranstaltungsraum belebt fortan flexibel und spontan den öffentlichen Raum in Basel und aktiviert unbürokratisch städtische Räume. In den letzten Wochen haben die Architektin Annette Gerteiser und Künstler*in Catherin Schöberl dafür im Rahmen einer Ausschreibung vom Verein “Wie wär’s mal mit” und Bosch eBike Systems ein eCargobike umgebaut. Alle Interessierten sind herzlich eingeladen kostenlos teilzunehmen.

Das fertige Bike wird am 23. Mai im Rahmen eines partizipativen Stadtmappings mit Apéro und Podiumsdiskussion der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert. Nach der Kickoff Veranstaltung kann das eCargobike über den Verein «Wie wär’s mal mit» für Events ausgeliehen werden, seien es gemeinschaftliche Pflanzaktionen, Kaffee und Kuchen Vormittage mit Retner*innen im Park, Konzerte, Performances, Parkkinos, Vermittlungsworkshops oder Apéros.


A hybrid of Apéro Velo, exhibition display, pop-up workshop and event space will from now on flexibly and spontaneously enliven the public space in Basel and activate urban spaces in an unbureaucratic way. In recent weeks, architect Annette Gerteiser and artist Catherin Schöberl have converted an eCargobike for this purpose as part of an open call from the association "Wie wär's mal mit" and Bosch eBike Systems.

The finished bike will be presented to the public on May 23 2023 as part of a participatory city mapping with apéro and panel discussion. After the kickoff event, the eCargobike can be rented through the association "Wie wär's mal mit" for events, be it community planting campaigns, coffee and cake mornings in the park, concerts, performances, park cinemas, mediation workshops or apéros.

++ Deconstructing Titan Art World Institutions            Artistic Intervention in with Neighbours of Narva (Estonia) in collaboration with Christoph Matt/Studio Matt, 2022

Gemeinsam mit dem Eco-Social Designer Christoph Matt bot die zweitägige künstlerische Intervention «Deconstructing Titan Art World Institutions» die Möglichkeit, sich vertieft mit grossen Kunst- und Kulturinstitutionen auseinanderzusetzen und kollektiv Werte zu erarbeiten, die diese in einer alternativen Zukunft verkörpern könnten. Gemeinsam mit den Teilnehmer:innen wurden Werte wie Vertrauen, Rücksicht, Nachhaltigkeit oder Aufrichtigkeit gesammelt, die anschliessend im Rahmen einer künstlerischen Bodenmalerei am Beispiel des Estnischen Nationalmuseums auf dessen Grundriss übertragen.

   Die Basis: Welche Werte sollten «Art World Titan Institutions» verkörpern? Welche Werte sollen beibehalten, welche hinzugefügt oder abgeschafft werden?
     Dekonstruieren & Rekonstruieren: Dekonstruiert den Grundriss des «ERM» - welche Räume sollen welche Werte repräsentieren und wie sollen diese angeordnet werden? Welche Werte sollen welchen Farben entsprechen?


Together with eco-social designer Christoph Matt, the two-day artistic intervention and workshop series „Deconstructing Titan Art World Institutions“ offered the opportunity to take an in-depth look at major art and cultural institutions and to collectively develop values that they could embody in an alternative future. Together with the participants, values such as trust, consideration, sustainability and sincerity were collectively collected and then transferred to the floor plan of the Estonian National Museum in the form of an artistic floor painting.

   The Base: Which values should be applied to “Art World Titan Institutions”? Which values do you want to keep, which ones do you want to add or get rid of?
