Der performativ experimentelle Kurzfilm zeigt abstrakte und entschleunigte Körperbewegungen und untersucht verschiedene Formen sexueller Erfahrungen und Lust. Der Film schafft feministische, gegenpornografische Bilder, ohne problematische heteronormative Körpergesten oder eine binäre Geschlechterordnung zu reproduzieren. Aus dem Bedürfnis heraus, einen sicheren Raum für die Schaffung von etwas "Neuem" gegenüber dem zu schaffen, was uns tagtäglich über unsere digitalen Geräte vermittelt wird, wird eine "Post-Porno"-Situation geschaffen, die sich nicht auf Genitalien, bestimmte Körperteile oder Techniken konzentriert. Der Film erforscht Choreografien, die etwas berühren, das die Darsteller:innen "mutige Zerbrechlichkeit" nennen, und findet Momente kollektiver wie auch individueller Begegnungen auf der Leinwand.
Auditiv wird der Film von eine poetischen Textelement begleitet, dass aus einer Sammlung von Antworten zusammengestellt wurde, die Fremde über das Online-Forum "reddit" auf Fragen gaben, wie "Wie würdest du Sex jemandem beschreiben, der ihn noch nie erlebt hat?", "Was gefällt dir am meisten an sexuellen Begegnungen?" und "Womit würdest du Sex im Alltag vergleichen?"
The performative experimental short film shows abstract and decelerated body movements and explores different forms of sexual experience and desire. The film creates feminist, counter-pornographic images without reproducing problematic heteronormative body gestures or a binary gender order. Out of a need to create a safe space for the creation of something "new" versus what is streamed to us daily through our digital devices, a "post-porn" situation is created that does not focus on genitals, specific body parts, or techniques. The film explores choreographies that touch on something the performers call "brave fragility" and finds moments of collective as well as individual encounters on screen.
Auditory, the film is accompanied by a poetic text element compiled from a collection of responses given by strangers via the online forum "reddit" to questions such as "How would you describe sex to someone who has never experienced it?", "What do you like most about sexual encounters?" and "What would you compare sex to in everyday life?"

Selbstporträts stellen den Versuch dar, den eigenen Körper subjektiv zu vermessen, das innere Bild mit den Blicken von Aussen zu koordinieren und sich diesen gleichzeitig zu widersetzen. Ein Versuch, auferlegte Narrative, eine Sexualisierung und Ästhetisierung nicht zu wiederholen. Doch wo in der selbst initiierten Dokumentation und Verfremdung des Selbst ist Raum für Selbstbestimmung? Können überhaupt neue Formen von Körperbildern entstehen, wenn der Wiederholungsdruck dessen, was wir regelmässig an Bildern konsumieren, so einseitig und prägend ist?
The photo series was created with the help of a scanner and the use of the artist's own body. The
self-portraits represent an attempt to subjectively measure one's own body, to coordinate the inner image with the gazes from outside and at the same time to resist them. An attempt not to repeat
imposed narratives, a sexualization and aestheticization. But where is space for self-determination in
the self-initiated documentation and alienation of the self? Can new forms of body images emerge at
all when the pressure of repeating what we regularly consume in terms of images is so one-sided and
formative?

„Hey Emily! What is your goal in life? Do you want to
share yours with me?” eine Frage, die unaufgeregt wirkt,
allerdings nach etwas Großem fragt: den Zielen im eigenen
Leben, für die meisten Menschen eine Sinnfrage. Denn ist
ein Leben ohne Ziel überhaupt lebenswert?
In einem 1896 veröffentlichten Gedichtband stellt
die Dichterin Emily Dickinson in einem ihrer Texte fest:
„in every human nature [exists] a goal” Catherin Schöberl
ist 2021 während des Lockdowns auf das Gedicht Each
life converges to some centre aufmerksam geworden und
fand sich, wenn auch unfreiwillig, in einer vergleichbaren
Lebenssituation wie Dickinson wieder. Die Autorin
hatte sich bereits in jungen Jahren in eine Art freiwillige
Selbstisolation begeben und das Haus nicht mehr
verlassen. Was den meisten Frauen von der Gesellschaft
ohnehin auferlegt war, wurde bei Dickinson zur freien
Wahl und damit zu einer Form der Selbstermächtigung.
Schöberl hingegen war gezwungen während eines
Arbeitsstipendiums von zu Hause aus zu arbeiten und
begann eine Internetrecherche. Über die Onlineplattform
Instagram hat sie die persönlichen Ziele verschiedener,
noch lebender Emilys gesammelt und daraus eine
Datenbank von rund 60 Lebenszielen erstellt. Mithilfe
des LIFE GOAL GENERATORS (2023) lassen sich jetzt per
Mausklick neue, für die Besucher*innen personalisierte
„Life Goals“ generieren. Im Stil eines computergenerierten
Horoskops wird gezeigt, was das Leben bereithält.
Durch das Programm, das aus der Datenbank immer
neue Ziele zusammenstellt, lassen sich selbstauferlegte
Ziele, Wünsche und Hoffnungen unserer Zeit erspüren.
Sie zeugen von einer Gesellschaft, die Hyperindividualität,
Selbstliebe und Selbstvermarktung immer wieder aufs
Neue in ihr neoliberales Wertesystem einspeist. Nach
einigen Durchläufen des Generators wird klar, dass die
Fragen, trotz der scheinbar unendlichen Möglichkeiten,
die das Leben bereit hält, mit verdächtig ähnlichen Lebenszielen und Haltungen beantwortet werden. Alle folgen
dem Ideal, sich und das Leben zu optimieren.
“Hey Emily! What is your goal in life? Do you want to share
yours with me?” a seemingly straightforward question that
asks after something bigger: the objectives of a person’s
life — or for many, the meaning of life itself. Because is a life
without a goal even worth living?
In a volume of poetry published in 1896, the poet
Emily Dickinson wrote: “in every human nature [exists]
a goal.” 1 Catherin Schöberl became aware of the poem
Each life converges to some centre during the lockdown
in 2021 and found herself, albeit involuntarily, living
under similar conditions to Dickinson. From a young age,
the writer undertook a kind of voluntary self-isolation,
never leaving the house. Something that was in any case
imposed on most women by society became a free
choice for Dickinson and thus a form of self-empowerment.
Schöberl was forced to work from home during a residency
and began an online research project. Using the online
platform Instagram, she collected the personal goals of
various living Emilys and used them to create a database
of around 60 life goals. With the help of the LIFE GOAL
GENERATOR (2023), visitors can receive new, personalised
“Life Goals,” generated at the click of a mouse. In the style
of a computer-generated horoscope, it shows what life
has in store.
The programme, which constantly assembles
new goals from the database, allows us to sense the selfimposed
wishes and hopes of our time. They bear witness
to a society that constantly feeds hyper-individuality,
self-love and self-promotion into its neoliberal value system.
After running the generator a few times, it becomes clear
that the question is met with suspiciously similar life goals
and attitudes each time, despite the seemingly infinite
possibilities of what life could have to offer. They all follow
the ideal of self-optimisation and improving one’s own life.

„Eine Talkrunde mit multiplen Persönlichkeiten führt eine hitzige Debatte über Feminismus und Gleichberechtigung. In Catherin Schöberls performativer Auseinandersetzung über Rollenbilder und Rollenzuschreibungen wird online verfügbares Material neu formatiert. Glitches und Snippets bieten ein diverses Angebot an Rollenbildern, das aber erst dann zu einer individuellen Ausgestaltung führt, wenn wir uns die Freiheit zu eigen machen einige der Angebote anzunehmen, andere abzulehnen, sie individuell zusammenzustellen oder dem Dargebotenen ganz zu entsagen und selbsttätig eigene Positionen zu entwickeln.“

Denn wie Frauen* sein dürfen und sollen oder auch nicht, strömt uns tagtäglich von Bildschirmen und Werbeplakaten entgegen. Die widersprüchlichen, unentschlossenen und überladenen Forderungen sind bereits so selbstverständlich in das Alltagsbewusstsein integriert, dass sie oft gar nicht mehr bewusst wahrgenommen, sondern lediglich nebenher mitkonsumiert werden. "This Is An Invitation" macht diese widersprüchlichen Forderungen sichtbar, verbindet sie auf neue Weise, setzt sie subversiv aus dem Zusammenhang und neu zusammen. Der Kurzfilm ist ein Angebot, sich der Stereotypen, der Überforderung und der Anforderungen an Geschlecht/Gender bewusst zu werden, sie anzunehmen, abzulehnen oder durch ganz Eigenes zu ergänzen.
A talk show with multiple personalities engages in a heated debate about feminism and equality. In Catherin Schöberl's performative examination of role models and role attributions, material available online is reformatted. Glitches and snippets offer a diverse range of role models, but this only leads to an individual formulation when we make it our own to accept some of the offers, reject others, put them together individually, or renounce what is offered altogether and develop our own positions on our own. For how women* are allowed to be and are supposed to be or not is streamed to us every day from monitors and advertising posters. The contradictory, indecisive and overloaded demands are already so naturally integrated into everyday consciousness that they are often no longer even consciously perceived, but merely consumed along the way. „This Is An Invitation“ makes the contradictory demands visible, connects them in new ways, subversively puts them out of context. The short film is an offer to become aware of the stereotypes, the overload and the demands on gender, to accept them, to reject them or to supplement them with something entirely one's own.

Das "Next Archive" ist Gedankenexperiment und raumgreifende Installation. Bestehend aus 2 Videoarbeiten, 2 Audiospuren und einer begehbaren Rauminstallation lädt die Arbeit dazu ein, ein utopisch_dystopisches Narrativ der Zukunft zu erfahren.
"Das sogenannte "Next Archive" ist kein Archiv im herkömmlichen Sinne: das (vermeintlich) erinnerungswürdige Dokumente der Vergangenheit konservieren würde. Nein, das „Next Archive“ hat sich radikal Richtung Zukunft gewandt. Auf der Grundlage der persönlichen Daten aller Proband*innen analysiert die dem "Next Archive" zugrunde liegende Superintelligenz, wie die ultimativ beste Zukunft aussehen könnte. Eine Zukunft, die unsere eigene Vorstellungskraft übersteigt und die von radikalem Glück, Frieden und Liebe geprägt ist."
The "Next Archive" is a thought experiment and a space-consuming installation. Consisting of 2 video works, 2 audio tracks and a walk-in spatial installation, the work invites the viewer to experience a utopian_dystopian narrative of the future.
"The so-called “Next Archive” is not an archive in the conventional sense: that would preserve (supposedly) memorable documents of the past. No, the "Next Archive" has radically turned towards the future. Based on the personal data of all test subjects, the superintelligence underlying the "Next Archive" analyzes what the ultimate best future looks like. A future that exceeds our own imagination and is characterized by radical happiness, peace and love."
