Challenging Contradictions
Catherin Schoeberl’s creative exploration is a response to societal contradictions. Rather than just accepting the way things are, her artistic journey of starts with deep reflection on the fast and complex transformation of our society. Conscious of the ever-growing digitalisation of our daily life, this German artist combines digital and analogue to open new perspectives on how we perceive technology. For Catherin, digital is not just a new media, but rather a material itself, like steel or wood. It is the perfect material to explore and question the times we are witnessing.

Zeitreisende:r. C interessiert sich für die
Schnittstelle zwischen individueller und
kollaborativer künstlerischer Praxis und
löst starre Grenzen zwischen Kunst,
Vermittlung und Aktivismus auf. So
spricht C regelmässig Einladungen an
Besucher:innen, Künstler:innen und
weitere friedvolle Kollaborateur:innen
aus, sich an einer Co-Kreation zu
beteiligen und sich mit den Mitteln der
Kunst gesellschaftspolitischen Fragen
anzunehmen. Dabei eignet sich C
häufig zeitgenössische Phänomene
des Digitalen an und generiert aus
kollaborativen Datensätzen, alternative
Realitäten, spekulative Zukünfte und
eigenwillige Archive. C übersetzt diese
Sphären in greif- und erlebbare soziale
Interaktionen, multimediale Installationen
und Filmarbeiten, die nicht selten durch
feministische Perspektiven ergänzt
werden, Ein Fokus liegt auf dem Konzept
der Öffentlichkeit als Pluriversum und auf
einem Kunstschaffen in und mit diesen
pluriversen Öffentlichkeiten.
Cs Arbeiten wurden in der Schweiz, Deutschland, Frankreich, Estland, Spanien und Portugal gezeigt und unter anderem mit dem 1. Preis des 45. Schweizer Jugendfilmfestivals ausgezeichnet.
Derzeit ist C. Co-Direktor:in eines Kunstraums und Archivs für zeitgenössische Kunst in Basel. In der Vergangenheit arbeitete C. für die 65. Internationalen Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, die Biennale für Freiburg, das Museum für Neue Kunst in Freiburg und die National Galleries of Scotland.
C erhielt Residenzstipendien des Goethe-Instituts, des Zentrums für Kunst und Medientechnologie - ZKM Karlsruhe, der Stiftung Mercator Schweiz und des Atelier Mondial Basel (Chile).
C wurde bei e-flux Art & Education und beim Verlag SHIFT Books veröffentlicht.
Catherin Schöberl is an artist,
educator, thinker and time traveler.
C is interested in the intersection
between individual and collaborative
artistic practice and dissolves rigid
boundaries between art, education and
activism. C regularly invites visitors,
artists and other peaceful collaborators
to participate in co-creation and to
address socio-political questions
through the means of art. C often
appropriates contemporary digital
phenomena and uses collaborative
data sets to generate alternative
realities, speculative futures and
self-willed archives. C translates
these spheres into tangible and
experienceable social interactions,
multimedia installations and film works,
which are often supplemented with
feminist perspectives. A particular
focus is on the concept of public as a
pluriverse and on creating art in and
with these pluriverse public(s).
Cs works have been shown in Switzerland, Germany, France, Estonia, Spain and Portugal and were awarded with the 1st price of the 45th Swiss Youth Film Festival among others.
Currently C is Co-Director of an art space and archive of contemporary art in Basel. In the past C has worked for the 65. International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, the Biennale für Freiburg, Museum für Neue Kunst in Freiburg, and the National Galleries of Scotland.
